  • Petrol fuel filter - leak
I was not aware of this, well at least I can slope my shoulders of the blame then ;)

On a weird note, ( I hadn't read this reply ) I went back to the dealer & explained that the valve had broke & they said they had it before & they just cable tied it into place... I said Ironically I had done the same haha.

It was definitely effecting the performance, the car is so much more smooth under heavy acceleration. All these remedies I had done prior with new HT leads, new sparks etc & it was the fuel filter.

    Hi all

the car has been starting to smell of petrol really badly recently, idling in traffic & I end up with a headache by the end of the journey.

Anyway so I had a look under the car & tried to take some of the plastic cover off the bottom on for one of the bolts to shear off.... anyway eventually managed to sneak a peak of the filter & it was rusty as hell & it definitely had been leaking for a while. ( potentially causing my rough idle warning every so often )

I decided I couldn't be bothered with the hassle so took it the local garage only for 2 companies to say they don't have the part , ironically one of them has " any part for any vehicle " in their logo...

Luckily the MG garage had the part but I didn't want to pay dealership fitting prices so I thought I'd bite the bullet & fit it myself...

About half an hour into a 20 minute job I find the rust had got so bad that it has corroded/broke the inside of the clip that holds it onto the pipe, so now one side of the pipe just slides in & out, I've had to bodge job it so that it is secure it but I just can't believe a 49k mileage car suffered this badly with a filter corroding...

Does anyone know where I can source a new clip from ... I'm hoping a don't have to order the whole pipe segment

Photo one, the clip once it was eventually removed...

photo 2 showing which clip it was.

  • What have I done buying a MG6?

Your video seems similar to mine, I would recommend putting the premium tesco petrol in & seeing if it fixes it.

Last year mine slowly got to a point where it would never start first time, after I put the decent petrol in it worked instantly & only ever needed topping up occasionally with it.

Mines just started with the dodgy start up again & I haven't put decent petrol in for well over 6 months so it's not that bad really.

I also had the earth bolts changed at the dealer too & new battery.

  • Isolate Internal Alarm Sensor
    Hey,

I've recently had a problem with my alarm so had to learn to do what you're asking.

Put your fob in but don't start you engine, go into your menu & there will extra options available including security,nb these are only available when the engine is not running.

On the security screen you can set it so that it's either on or 'ask' when you remove the fob. On removing the fob just press the button to confirm on the steering wheel stick & this turns off the internal sensors but leaves the normal one still on.

That took me 12 months of ownership to find that menu completely by accident, but it also has other interesting features such as the gear change option ( which is nowhere near useful ) but still interesting to mess around with.

  • Starting Problems
I initially had all of the earth bolts changed at the MG dealer , which seemed to solve it for a bit but then it returned then someone said use the expensive tesco petrol at work, & like magic it instantly fixed it.

After about a month it came back so I filled up with the tesco stuff again another couple of times, & now it's about 6 months after the last time I put the expensive stuff in & still no problems. So I think it's just a case of occasionally putting 5 or 10 pounds worth of the stuff in to keep the car happy. :)

  • How to fix MG6 alarm sounding unintentionally
Thanks for putting this post on here. My alarm has been going off everytime I used the fob after it had been locked for several hours.

I knew the alarm was somewhere behind the bumper but after pulling the boot apart I couldn't find it & then I read this thread.

I haven't managed to remove the alarm as like someone else has stated, it has a 'security bolt'.

I have just unclipped the wire for the moment, so all that happens is the lights flash, can anyone see this having any other effect than silencing the alarm? As in my opinion if someone wants to steal my car ( unlikely ) an alarm isn't going to stop them. ( yes insurance would likely be affected )

On the plus side I found that whole new menu I didn't realise was that that you can only access when the engine is off.

  • M6 6 poor traction?
Only in the snow around our area last month, driving around I found it a lot easier in our Suzuki Swift, the MG6 even with the added traction control did find it difficult to get up banks here. Although I think I put that down to the Turbo, whenever I drove my old ZS you could literally sit on the clutch & it would take you where you wanted to go.

    Evening all ,

The car has behaved for 6 months or so..... well since I fixed the poor starting issue anyway.

So ever since I've had the car whenever I've gone down long hills, banks. I've had the odd 'flashing engine light' pop up.

I've never really taken much notice of it as I just assumed it was the MPG calculator getting upset because it went off the chart ( gets stuck at 113 MPG then goes ----- ) As soon as I press my accelerator the engine light goes off again.

Anyway 2 days ago it started to get more frequent, & today it happened 3 times in one trip IE even very small declining banks, due to it happening 3 times in one trip the 'check engine light' came on permanently & I pulled up the codes.

    p0300
    P0303 , P0304, p0301, p0302

In other words I have a misfire across all cylinders.

( history ) I have changed all sparks & HT leads.

    IDEA
I have recently moved to a new house where my drive is ridiculously steep , ie the tank says I'm empty when it's half full then when I park up at work for the day it returns to normal but the trip computer still says I have 50 miles till I run out.

Example I was sitting on my drive today after returning home & it was at 3 bars, then because I left it idling for a few minutes it showed 'LOW FUEL' warning light.

This may not be connected at all but I cant think of anything else as I don't have a misfire... when the light is flashing, or idling so I don't even understand why it keeps flashing at me.... I can't help but think it's the gremlins.... Due to amount of issues I've been having with it over the 9months I've owned it too I'm thinking of just part-ex ing it for an insignia , same power, size look etc but hopefully less of the flashing lights .....

Any thoughts would be appreciated but I've started to realise it's not like owning my old ZS where hundreds of people have had your issues before....

  • MG6 only starts SECOND time with the fob.
Just to update this for the poor sods that may have this issue in the future, ( i always complain when people never update )

I took it to MG dealership , they changed the 7 earthing bolts & it's behaved since ..... £50 ( I think they melted down frodos ring or something ) , AA warranty doesn't cover it, because , well , it's bolts.... apparently. ( bit of a joke in my opinion ) So if you have the issue, change them yourself & save yourself a bit of money :)

On a side note MG failed to bolt down my powersteering fluid reservoir & they had to send out a mobile mechanic to temp fix it till I could drive back to them, so yeah I think this might be my last MG as the last 6 months of ownership haven't been the best. I'm actually starting to wish I didn't part ex the ZS.
