MG6 Cruise Control

7 years 9 months ago #125 by KevandAnna
We had just taken delivery of our new MG6 from the MG Motor Sales Centre, but 30 miles down the M42 the Cruise Control showed a fault condition and stopped working! Re-starting the engine always managed to reset it again so all would be well for a few more miles!
The outcome was a return to the factory where diagnosis showed a Cruise Control earthing fault.
It was apparently the first time this had been seen, but if there is anyone else out there with an intermittent Cuise Control......then it's worth having the earth connection checked! Kev and Anna.

When I was at the factory recently, Ian Pogson said he'd sorted an earth connection under the bonnet of mine but I wasn't paying close attention to what he'd done but it sounds like it was a pre-emptive fix for the reason you describe, although our c/c wasn't playing up.

Thanks for the update and welcome to the forum. Are you an MGCC member? If so I will change your status accordingly so you can see the MGCC member section and hopefully we will get to see you at future events. Enjoy your new car!

There are a few earth issues that are inherent from china, but are fixed in Longbridge before the cars are completed. There were also some intercooler hose clips issues when China changed the supplier which resulted in an inferior grip. The inferior clip requires additional poundage on tightening.

I've just had the same fault coming back from South Wales down the M5.

Bit of a hassle getting it down to the dealer, so can anyone tell me which earth it is?

Not sure - but it must be an earth from the Cruise Control unit to the body/chassis. We returned ours to Longbridge as that's where we bought it, (don't have any dealers in our area!). Interface was through the sales team who couldn't provide much info!
Perhaps Ian Pogson mentioned by Martin W maybe a better person to ask?
Thought we were the only one's with this prob. but apparently not!? If MG Motor thought ours was the first time they'd seen this fault then it could be unlikely your dealer will know about it.

I tried to use Cruise Control this morning and got a Cruise control Error, definitely not temperature related as I had been driving for an hour. The cruise control buttons on my wheel are not as solid as the radio controls on the left side so this may be related to my problem.

I will contact the garage later & see what they suggest.

Any more news on the problem, KevandAnna? Hope it gets sorted soon.

David, it seems your problem sounds slightly different as I understand that the problems to date have been an error when using the resume button after being under cruise control already. Is yours giving the error when first activating the c/c on/off button?

Thinking about it I had used CC and put it in Standby using the "resume" button. It was when I tried to resume it that I got the error.

Seeing that "davidj" also has a cruise control problem I thought it worth an update!
Our car has been back to Longbridge twice now, we collected it for the 2nd time following the factory visit a couple of weeks ago. The problem is being managed by Gary Egan and Keith Harris. Keith explained that they were aware of the CC problem on about 5 cars now so it would be worth david letting them know about his problem too. I was concerned that our car was being used as the test vehicle, being wired up to a data logger and being driven up and down the motorway in the hope of catching a failure! Keith explained that the problem has also been seen on one of their manager's cars and that the data logger would be transferred to his to catch and locate the fault. He was honest in that MG did not know what was causing the problem but would be in touch with me when a fix had been found and proven. Meanwhile we agreed to keep a log of failures, noting when they happened at what speed and in what gear we were using when the cruise control dropped out. On our way home from Longbridge CC failed twice, but always seems to be ok again once the engine has been re-started and the "computer" concerned re-booted. The best place for this to be resolved is with the MG Motor Tech Team as I don't think a dealership would be able to add anything more to the ongoing investigation. At least we know now that "we are not alone"! with this one. Kev and Anna

Thanks for the update Kev. On my way home tonight I tried everything to get it to fail again, standby/resume numerous times, varying speed up & down using the rotary control, speeding up & slowing down with the throttle in and out of cruise. It worked perfectly throughout!

The only thing I didn't do was allow the "binnacle" on the steering wheel that houses the cruise switches to rotate (mine apears to be faulty in that it will move forwards & backwards) which it definately did this morning when it failed.
